A timeline of how CosmaSense started (SAIL @ UW–Madison) and how it’s evolving into a polished, open-source product.
Summer 2025 — SAIL (UW–Madison × OpenAI)
2025 · SummerCosmaSense began in SAIL — a collaboration with the UW–Madison CDIS department and OpenAI. We were challenged to build something real with OpenAI.
August 2025 — Top 3 Pitch + OpenAI Support
2025 · AugWe placed #2 in the final pitch and earned the chance to talk with OpenAI. We also got support and feedback from OpenAI employees — and had our first working MVP.
Sep–Oct 2025 — V2 Rebuild
2025 · Sep–OctWe iterated hard: rethinking the architecture and building a second version with better reliability and a clearer search pipeline.
Fall 2025 — SwiftUI Frontend
2025 · FallIn parallel, we started building the native macOS frontend in SwiftUI.
November 2025 — Open Source Everything
2025 · NovWe made the call to open-source the whole stack. That’s when we created the repos and launched this website.
Nov–Dec 2025 — Venture Build + Business Plan
2025 · Nov–DecWe refined the product and business plan while participating in Venture Build (UW–Madison). During the semester we were also paired with two MBA students who helped us think through the business side.
Dec 2025 — Backend + TUI First Release
2025 · DecWe shipped the first release of the backend with a terminal UI (TUI) and started dogfooding the workflow.
January 2026 — SwiftUI First Release
2026 · JanWe released the first SwiftUI app build — and we’re in rapid rebuild mode. A fully working beta is coming soon.
